Written Worlds

My first understanding of the worlds an author can create, I suppose, came out of the previously mentioned 'Invasion' serial I wrote in the fourth grade.  I had to incorporate all of my friends, and other folks in my class, giving them roles and purposes in the defense of the Earth from aliens.

The next year, while in the library, I found a collection of Greek mythology.  I can go find the book tonight if I really wanted, because I did not return it to the library.  It was a fairly basic collection looking at with 'todays eyes', but it sparked a whole revolution in how I thought about this kind of an idea.

In the next year, I scoured the 1970s World Book encyclopedias we had in our home, cross-referencing the Greek Gods and their stories as they came up.  I was slightly hindered by the fact that we were missing the 'I' volume (apparently lent out before I was born).

After all of that, my next understanding was something that was in some ways more vast.  I was sick perhaps, but I remember being in my grandmother's bedroom, and watching a VHS copy of The Empire Strikes Back.

The 'Star Wars Universe' in the 90s was ridiculously massive.

And my interest in it would grow, explode, and deflate.

And will be discussed in my next entry...
